Jurisdiction

How court jurisdiction works

Jurisdiction is the court's authority to hear a particular kind of dispute. In Australian class actions, the right court depends on the legal issues, the parties, the legislation relied on, and where the events occurred.

Federal jurisdiction Federal Court matters usually involve Commonwealth legislation or nationally significant disputes, including corporations, consumer law, financial services, privacy, employment, competition and migration-related questions.
State and territory jurisdiction State and territory Supreme Courts hear major civil disputes within their own systems. Some have representative proceeding regimes or procedural rules that can support group claims.
